[ Natasha tries not to get too personal with the people that S.H.I.E.L.D. brings in. That was never the lifestyle permitted for her, not since even before she'd join this secret agency, a stoic professional attitude presented as part of the KGB as well. She'd blame it all on the Red Room, on how they'd train her not to feel, to be nothing but a killer with no personal future to gamble on. Except she wasn't in that room anymore. Everything from here was up to her.

Except it wasn't. She'd traded one secret, dangerous lifestyle for another. There was nothing beyond this.

And yet she feels a subtle warmth in her chest when Beth's voice echoes from beyond her door. She'd grown oddly protective of the girl since they'd brought her in. As though there was a positive to keep her from falling into dark paths like she'd done. Nat knew that was the limit to what this all was. And she knew to keep it that way.

Opening the door, she leans on its edge as she looks over the girl, at damp hair falling over her shoulders and the way she looks more exhausted than she lets on. ]
Usually I require a password for getting past this point but — [ She gives a small smile, gesturing with a slight wave of her hand. ] I'll make an exception for you.

( Oh, if only Natasha had been around some six months earlier.

Maybe kept her from following a tip that ended in a civilian shooting, maybe kept her from ever speaking to Mika in the first place, from finding out Paul was a— a fake, a spy on her life that could barely bring himself to look at her anymore, a void that just lied and lied. There was no one, though, that could have kept Beth's life from unravelling. God knows Art had tried.

She'd gotten onto some dark paths, but she'd gotten pretty good at hiding the extent of them. (Or maybe not that good at all, with the investigations and the surprise drug tests, and Cosima looking at her like she might break.)

The sight of Nat, the open door, both are a relief. Beth summons up a little smile as she steps in, her trademark wry snarkiness - wit was good for covering up all kinds of things. )
Shit, you really know how to make a girl feel special.

( Annnd her gym bag is tossed on the floor. )
